Stephen Sondheim Theatre

Formerly the Henry Miller's Theatre

  • 1,055 seats
  • 2levels
  • Proscenium stage
  • Opened 2009

Imani's take

Upside-down theater: you walk in at the mezzanine and go down to the orchestra. Modern build, so sightlines and legroom are good. East of Seventh on 43rd — the Bryant Park trains are right there.

Where to Sit at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre

Levels, bottom to top: Orchestra → Mezzanine. A mid-size house.

One mezzanine over the orchestra

Two levels only, so the mezzanine is the whole upper house — its front rows are some of the best seats in the building for anything with choreography or a big set. The last rows of the orchestra sit under the overhang — fine for a play, a little boxed-in for a big musical.

Our rule of thumb

For a play, get close and center. For a spectacle, get high and center. Partial-view seats are discounted for a reason — check the seat map before you buy.

Good to Know

  • Rebuilt in 2009, mostly underground, behind the original 1918 facade
  • You enter at mezzanine level; the orchestra is downstairs
  • About two-thirds of the seats are in the orchestra
