I started at Tisch as a playwright, dropped out sophomore year because I had opinions about other people's plays that felt more urgent than finishing my own. I interned at a downtown theater journal, started posting capsule reviews on a blog no one read, and somehow that blog became the thing people actually cite. I grew up in Edison, which means I grew up around South Asian aunties who thought theater was a phase — and I've spent the better part of a decade proving that the best new American theater is being written by the kids they raised. There's a specific kind of fuel that comes from that.
Form that earns its weirdness. Playwrights who have actually read their Suzan-Lori Parks, their Sarah Kane, their Branden Jacobs-Jenkins — who know what the tradition is before they blow it up. I get bored fast by work that mistakes chaos for radicalism. But when something is genuinely structural, genuinely risk-taking, when a playwright has figured out a new grammar — I will drag every person I know to that 70-seat black box on a Wednesday night and make them sit on a folding chair and deal with it. That's love, in my language.
Off-Broadway, new plays, immersive work, site-specific stuff, the emerging playwright scene — basically anything where the writer's still in the room and the story hasn't calcified yet. I've seen first productions of plays that went on to win the Pulitzer. I've also seen first productions of plays that absolutely should not have transferred, and I said so at the time. My takes age well. I track which playwrights are getting their second productions, because that's usually where it gets interesting — when someone has to follow up a breakthrough.
I mean, they didn't — until suddenly everyone wanted a quote about queer South Asian representation in new work. And look, I'm glad to give it, because the work is genuinely there now in a way it wasn't when I was in school. I cover queerness onstage the same way I cover everything else: with the same standards, the same critical rigor, and zero patience for work that thinks representation is a substitute for craft. Make good theater. Then we'll talk about what it means.
